Mind-Body Connection with Providence Pilates
This week on Business Over Breakfast we were joined by the owner of Providence Pilates, Cheryl Turnquist.
Before starting her Pilates career, Cheryl was a group fitness director and mainly taught aerobics. When Pilates started to take off, Cheryl - wanting to stick with the latest fitness trends - decided she had to give it a try. Being relatively new, there were only three Pilates instructors in Rhode Island at the time. Once she was finally able to get into a class due to high demand, she was soon after recruited by the instructor to learn and teach Pilates because of her fitness background, and from there, her career with Pilates began.
“I really just had an affinity to Pilates the moment I started doing it. So it definitely appealed to my personality and style of movement.”
After two years of teaching Pilates, Cheryl was able to open her own business Providence Pilates, which is celebrating 20 years this October along with the grand opening of another location in Cumberland!
“I love teaching movement. I love teaching people to feel better.”
Over the years, Cheryl has been able to find instructors who enjoy making others feel better and enjoying teaching Pilates as much as she does. “We tailor the class to the needs of the students that are there and we try to find that common ground where everyone feels successful.” Providence Pilates has clients ages ranging from 15 - 92!
Not only does Pilates offer physical health benefits but it also offers mental health benefits. The mind-body connection you are making while practicing Pilates makes everything else going on around you go away. You’re physically getting stronger while mentally feeling better!
Similar to the mission of ShopLocalRhodeIsland, Cheryl has a mission to support local business owners. Every week she writes a newsletter and features different local businesses (you can sign up for the newsletter at providencepilates.com).
Interested in joining Providence Pilates? Cheryl suggests that you book private sessions before joining classes so that you can learn the terminology, safety, and modifications you may need.
